After a seven-year break, Emily Millard returns with her fourth studio album, HAZY BLUE, a rich exploration of love through moody folk soundscapes. This long-awaited record features Millard’s soaring vocals over lush orchestration, creating an album full of heartfelt ballads about love in its many forms—be it teenage heartbreak, whirlwind romance, or love tinged with grief and healing.

Having previously toured extensively across North America and Europe, Millard faced significant personal and financial challenges, leading her to pause and move to Vancouver to complete a composition degree. This period allowed her to focus on self-care, direct a community choir, and produce for other artists, ultimately renewing her creative spirit. As she began songwriting again at residencies like Leña on Galiano Island and Banff Centre, Millard’s lyrics grew more introspective and genuine.

HAZY BLUE, recorded with co-producer John Raham at Vancouver’s Afterlife Studios, features a stellar lineup of Vancouver’s folk musicians and presents a blend of synths, acoustic instruments, and inventive sounds. The album opens with the upbeat “When You Unfold Your Love,” explores themes of youthful and seasoned love, and concludes with the poignant “The Mouth of Mount Joan.” With its blend of bold sonic experimentation and emotional depth, HAZY BLUE stands as a testament to Millard’s artistic resilience and nuanced storytelling.

“The Cost of Love” is currently streaming as a single on multiple platforms and is receiving much critical appreciation. Her previous album from 2016, entitled By Heron & By Season, is also widely available for streaming, and is well worth exploration as a complement to this fine new release which we strongly recommend.
